String Quartet
This two-movement string quartet is a piece in which I consider one of my best, as it has been written over the course of a year and showcases my journey as a musician and composer in discovering a sound which I can consider my own. Inspired by the music of Ravel and Bartok, this work explores a wide range of harmonic language and techniques as I have aimed to push my knowledge of string writing to its limits. The first movement, marked as “Allegro con moto”, is a monstrous journey through a wide range different emotions, starting with an adventurous and quirky opening, which is then followed by a dark contrapuntal middle section, leading into an intense and dissonant contrast to the beginning, which ends back at the start line. The second movement, marked as “Lento assai”, explores the duality of dissonance and consonance seen throughout, represented by a constantly returning 4 note motif. The music evokes the feeling of meandering through what seems like an endless void, becoming more and more intense and unsettled until it reaches its peak. The process of composing this work has been a long and arduous path but as I reach the end of this journey, I find myself proud of all I have accomplished and hope that it is reflected in my music.
